News: The farm is moving to Massachusetts
We have started to slowly transition the farm from Johnston, RI to a new location in South Eastern Massachusetts. The start of this transition will take place this fall and begin with moving some equipment, building a greenhouse, and starting plans and preparations for next springs’ planting before winter sets in. The lease on our current land ends in March 2014 and the lease on the new land officially begins January 2014, so the majority of moving will take place over the winter. It is very difficult to move a farm for a number of reasons (including the amount of infrastructure and soil fertility we have built over the past two years that we have to leave behind). We don’t have a choice about staying at the current location either solely or additionally, as it will be turned into housing lots.
The good news is the new farm located in Raynham, Massachusetts offers us much more acreage to help with our dream of building a sustainable farm. The additional acreage (the new property has 88 acres) will allow us to grow grain, have cows which greatly impacts soil quality and fertility in addition to providing food and allow for more crop rotation and cover cropping. The hope is that this transition will also eventually lead us to a long term home for the farm. We are committed to our CSA members, food distribution programs (Veggie Box, Market Share and Market Mobile) and other customers in Rhode Island and hope you’ll continue to support us in this transition in location and scale that will ultimately bring more sustainably produced, locally grown, organic food to Southern New England.
